Joint Doctoral Programs with International Institutions
IIT Delhi offers Joint Doctoral Programs (JDPs) in collaboration with leading international institutions: the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Taiwan.
PhD students enrolled in these programs benefit from joint supervision by faculty at both IIT Delhi and the partner university. As part of the program, students spend a portion of their PhD tenure at the partner institution, with the cost of their stay abroad fully supported.Admission Process:

- Applications for the joint PhD program open annually for a July intake.
- Applicants must submit an online Expression of Interest (EOI) by the due date.
- Please note that admissions to the UQ–IITD JDP are conducted separately from regular IIT Delhi PhD admissions.

IITD–NYCU Joint PhD Program
- Follows the regular PhD admission process of IIT Delhi.
- After admission at IIT Delhi, students may identify a co-supervisor at NYCU (Taiwan) in consultation with their IIT Delhi supervisor.

PhD Programmes for Foreign Citizens
The Office of Dean International Programmes facilitates admissions and financial support for foreign nationals to pursue PhD at IIT Delhi. The details are provided on https://international.iitd.ac.in and are summarized below:
- Non-Indian nationals (including persons with OCI or PIO cards) are eligible to apply for admission to graduate programs as foreign candidates with financial support. However, candidates who have obtained their qualifying degree from an Institute/University in India will have to meet additional requirements of qualifying national exams (GATE, JAM etc). - Foreign nationals with Indian Council for Cultural Relations award (ICCR): The Indian Council for Cultural Relations provides financial assistance to foreign students for pursuing PhD at IIT Delhi. PhD Programmes for Indian Citizens
Various schemes are available for providing financial assistance to PhD students. The details are provided in the information brochure and are summarised here:
- Full-time Institute Assistantship (FIA): Non-sponsored students who are admitted on full-time basis are considered for the award of Half Time Teaching/Research Assistantship. The assistantship amount is Rs. 37,000 per month + 27% HRA for the first 2 years and Rs. 42,000 per month + 27% HRA. PhD students on FIA are expected to spend 8 hours per week on teaching/research assistance. The maximum duration for which assistantship can be awarded to a Ph.D. student is 5 years.
- Part Time and Sponsored PhD: IIT Delhi offers part-time and sponsored PhD programs for working professionals, with work experience. The key requirements include, a minimum work experience, having a no-objection certificate from your employer. Only employees of Public Sector Undertakings or Government Departments or Research and Development Organizations or Private Industries (approved by Faculty Boards of Academic Units) are eligible for admission to these programmes. Sponsored candidates must be fully relieved from their official duties and have a study leave of a minimum period of 3 years (2 years for M.Tech. or equivalent degree holders). Part-time students are required to reside at the Institute for completing the coursework; those working in NCR within 50 km radius of the Institute are exempted from residency. The minimum full-time experience and other details are provided in the Information Brochure for admission to PhD programme.
- Sponsored Research Projects: PhD students admitted on full-time basis can also be supported through sponsored research projects managed by Industrial Research & Development (IRD) Unit and Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT). The Academics Units advertise the funding opportunities on sponsored projects at the time of selection interviews.
- Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF): IIT Delhi awards PMRF Fellowship to exceptional Ph.D. candidates. PMRF fellows receive a monthly stipend of Rs 70,000 and an annual contingency grant of Rs 2 Lakh. To be considered for the PMRF, candidates must first be admitted to IIT Delhi’s regular Ph.D. programmedirect/lateral. The Institute then nominates top candidates with outstanding academic records and research potential. Visit https://www.pmrf.in for more information.
- Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics &IT: The Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme, supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, aims to enhance the number of PhDs in critical areas of Electronics and IT. Under this scheme, full-time PhD scholars receive ₹38,750 per month in the 1st and 2nd years, and ₹43,750 per month in the 3rd to 5th years, along with contingency grants. The scheme also extends support to part-time PhD candidates with one time incentive of Rs. 3,00,000/- on successful completion of the PhD. - Quality Improvement Programme (QIP): Under the QIP scheme, faculty members of AICTE approved institutions are given the opportunity to upgrade their qualifications. IIT Delhi offers Ph.D. Programmes under QIP. The selected candidates are paid scholarships and contingency grants by the AICTE. Visit https://cepqip.iitd.ac.in/aboutQIP for more details.
- Other Scholarships: Various scholarship opportunities funded by external agencies are available to ongoing PhD students are IIT Delhi. These include, TCS Research Scholarship Programme, Google PhD Fellowship Programme, and Microsoft Research India Award.
- Conference travel: Institute provides seed money of Rs. 20,000/- once during the program as partial financial assistance for presenting papers abroad in good academic conferences. All full time (and part-time on IRD/ FITT Projects) Research Scholars are also eligible for additional financial assistance of Rs. 1,80,000/- as Research Scholar Travel Award (RSTA). Some highly meritorious Research Scholars are also eligible for an additional travel grant of Rs. 2,00,000/- as Research Excellence Travel Award (RETA).
Hostel Accommodation
Allotment of a hostel seat is done only after generation of Entry Number (communicated through Welcome Kit). Students do not need to approach for this. For the eligible category, IIT Delhi takes care of hostel allotment (post Entry Number generation). Only after payment of applicable charges within the given time window, the hostel seat will be confirmed. Students can onboard in the hostels 1–2 days before registration/orientation. Eligibility:
– UG/MSc/MA Students may be allotted a seat on priority (sharing basis only).
– PG/Ph.D Students (Full Time only): There is a severe hostel crunch in the campus due to which it is NOT possible to provide hostel accommodation to postgraduate (PG) students (including PhD). However, the Institute strives to provide a hostel seat (on sharing basis only), if available, to admitted female students, students with special needs (SwD – Students with Disabilities, formally admitted as PwD) and foreign nationals.
Hence, it is to be noted that the offer of admission at IIT Delhi does not guarantee on-campus accommodation. The best support, pertaining to accommodation, is in form of providing the contact information of some off-campus accommodation that may be available within walking distance of the campus. Please note that these off-campus accommodations, if available, operate independent of IIT Delhi. Further, while staying off-campus, there are provisions for making one of our on-campus messes available to students for food on monthly subscription basis.
